Passage to the City by Budhaditya Chattopadhyay

The Auricle Sonic Arts Gallery
Showing: 3rd-31st March, 2016
Opening: Thursday 3rd March, 6-8pm

Passage to the City explores the imperceptible sound-field existing between the itinerant city-dweller and the inhabited urban space of everyday. The project uses the method of sensitizing resonant frequency of the inaudible space by performative intervention of the city-dweller to develop a contingent composition. The resultant work redefines the ecologies of everyday listening by making hidden sound elements audible to the ear, in the process triggering the city-dweller’s imagination and awareness of an innate and pervasive sound-field present even in a presumably silent empty-space within the tangible environment of the city. Sounds generated by city-dweller’s interaction with the city are digitally mapped and mediated as primary materials of the work.

Budhaditya Chattopadhyay is an Indian artist and researcher working with sound and new media. Chattopadhyay’s work questions the materiality, site-specificity and object-hood of sound, and addresses the aspects of contingency, contemplation and mindfulness inherent in listening. His works have been published by Gruenrekorder (Germany) and Touch (UK). Chattopadhyay has received several residencies and international awards, notably an Honorary Mention at PRIX Ars Electronica 2011, Linz, and First Prize in Computer and Electronic Music category of Computer Space festival 2014, Sofia. Appearing in numerous exhibitions, concerts, conferences and festivals, Chattopadhyay’s sound-works have been exhibited, performed or presented among others in Transmediale, Berlin; TodaysArt Festival, The Hague; Donau Festival, Krems; IEM, Kunstuniversität Graz; Sonorities Festival, Belfast; Akusmata, Helsinki; Overgaden Institute of Contemporary Art, Copenhagen; CTM, Berlin; Errant Bodies, Berlin; CPH PIX, Copenhagen; Hochschule Darmstadt, Dieburg; SoundFjord, London; Deutschlandradio, Berlin; Institut für Neue Medien, Frankfurt; and Nikolaj Kunsthal, Copenhagen.

As part of his NZ tour Russian Tsarlag (of Providence Rhode Island) will be appearing @ The Auricle this coming Friday, alongside Les Baxters & File Folder!

“A lot of bands are from Providence, Rhode Island but few as much as Russian Tsarlag, the monolithic musical project of filmmaker and comics artist Carlos G. I am fortunate enough to have seen Tsarlag evolve over the last decade++ and I still hesitate to describe what one might be getting into: A showman first and foremost with a crooner’s brood, a voice front and centre behind a cluster of derelict instruments, tape loops, and liquids. Memorable, charming, unusual, and quiet–because it can be, because every time I have seen him the audience is spellbound or cautiously curious. Countless cassette and vinyl releases across Not Not fun, Night People, Hot Releases, Unskilled Labour, ad nausea. His first visit to the southern hemisphere.”

CHRIS ABRAHAMS & ANTHONY PATERAS: 176 (2007/16)

The Auricle Sonic Arts Gallery
Showing: 4th – 28th February, 2016
Opening: Thursday 4th February, 6-8pm
Facebook event

176 is a 2-hour tape piece for two pianists who don’t use their fingers, only playing with all other parts of their arms, very softly and with no sustain pedal. Featuring two usually dexterous performers, the strategy is an inbuilt subversion mechanism of their typical techniques, thus existing as a complete anomaly in their respective oeuvres. Two Steinway Ds were recorded at ABC Melbourne, close miked at high gain to exaggerate the tactility and fragility of performance. The Auricle installation is the world premiere of this work.

Chris Abrahams (B. 1961, Sydney) is best known as the pianist for the legendary Australian trio The Necks. He made a name for himself in Australia as part of Mark Simmonds’ Freeboppers in the 80s and as a close collaborator of Melanie Oxley’s in the 90s. Abrahams can currently be found in close playing partnerships with Australian composer Anthony Pateras, German percussionist Burkhard Beins, and Italian laptop composer/linguistic deconstructionist Alessandro Bosetti.

Anthony Pateras (B. 1979, Melbourne) is a composer, pianist and electro-acoustic musician. His work explores sound and its mutation through varying constellations of notation, improvisation, electronic and acoustic materials. Pateras’ compositions have been performed worldwide and he has toured his own bands since the late 1990s. Aside from recently releasing tētēma: geocidal with Mike Patton, he runs the Immediata label, which will be releasing a series of 15 investigative CDs with interviews and essays throughout 2016/17.

Recorded by Christopher Lawson, Iwaki Auditorium, ABC Southbank, Melbourne. 5.1  mix and master by Byron Scullin, Deluxe Mastering, Melbourne.
